80’s Overdrive was one of the several titles I picked up on a whim during a buying spree prior to the closure of the Nintendo 3DS eShop in March of 2023. For what little I paid for this handheld nostalgic racing experience straight from the neon-lit 1980s, I can’t say I was disappointed.

Developed by Insane Code, 80’s Overdrive seeks to bring the retro charm of classic racing games to the modern age with beautiful pixel art visuals, thumping synthwave soundtrack, and adrenaline-pumping races. The game truly pays homage to the arcade racers of days gone by and offers fans of the genre a must-try experience.

Besides the stunning art style and exceptional soundtrack, 80's Overdrive nails the classic arcade racing gameplay that made games like Out Run and Lotus Turbo Challenge so beloved. You can choose from a variety of '80s sports cars, each with its unique characteristics, and then hit the road. The controls are responsive and easy to grasp, if not a tad too loose for my tastes, but both newcomers and veterans can easily get accustomed and start racking up wins.

The game also features a decently expansive career mode with a number of races and challenges to complete. While you may spend a lot of your time grinding out early races to upgrade your car, there is a sense of slow progression that makes each race satisfying to complete. The tracks, quick treks through scenic routes and bustling city streets, are diverse in environment but not in execution, with several tracks just being a reskin of others. I don’t believe this to be a terrible downside to the game, just something to keep in mind.

Overall, 80's Overdrive successfully captures the essence of '80s arcade racing games, delivering an authentic nostalgia trip for fans of the genre. With its stunning pixel art, synthwave soundtrack, and challenging races, it's a must-play for anyone looking to relive the glory days of arcade racing. While the career mode, however, does offer hours of gameplay, the incentive to continue playing 80’s Overdrive after rolling credits is near nonexistent. The inclusion of a track editor and the ability to download custom tracks from other players does extend the game's lifespan, but it's still a somewhat limited experience compared to other modern racers. Regardless of these shortcomings, if you're a fan of retro racers 80's Overdrive is well worth your time.

A small heavily Outrun inspired racing game I got on the cheap. You'll spend a lot of time early on grinding upgrades for your car, and mechanics are simple, but a lot of care was put into this game. Raced every track and had a great time.

The machine is unfair, the music is repetitive, there isn't enough room to avoid the traffic and police cars.

A racing game unfortunately repeats itself a lot I did 100% but unfortunately the machine is very unfair, but I had fun, it's a very short game that does 100% in 7 hours. many times my departure was frustrated by the machine like the police car that chases you all the time and if it is a rivals race your car is easier to be hit than the rivals which causes a huge imbalance, it is fun but unfair in some stages on the game map.
