Big Nose Freaks Out is a platform game for the NES, produced by Codemasters and published by Camerica. The player controls a cave man character who has had all his bones stolen from a prehistoric bank by a dinosaur. Bignose sets off on an adventure through numerous prehistoric settings. Bignose defeats enemies using a club, however he also has access to a primitive skate board device (stone-boarding), via his invention - the wheel. The game is essentially a platform game in which the player collects bones and other items, while travelling from left to right until reaching the goal. B.N.F.O also had a two player mode and the addition of numerous secret levels and bonuses. Big Nose Freaks Out has become popular as more people have access to the ROM file through emulation websites.

a janky but fun sonic rip off on the NES

I wish I had been able to rent the original Big Nose the Caveman game as a kid, instead of this one, as I would have likely enjoyed it more. That said, this is still a solid, and fairly creative Codemasters/Camerica game. It's unique in that you ride your prehistoric "skateboard" 100% of the time, and that lends itself to a very different kind of platforming/side-scrolling experience. It features the same sort of bouncy, upbeat music that most Codemasters games did, and colorful graphics.

Again, the OG Big Nose is a more fun, more fleshed out game, in my opinion. But this sequel is one of the more unique platformers you'll ever play, and still worth a look.

I'm not sure how to explain this game, you're a caveman rolling around on a skateboard thingy. Imagine Sonic games if Sonic games were good - and you'd get this.
There is plenty of cool levels and even lots of secrets.
