The game is based on the popular anime TV series of the same name. The player controls a transformable VF-1 Valkyrie variable fighter in an unending battle against an invading race of giant humanoid aliens known as the Zentradi.

It's a cute and surprisingly innovative conversion of the classic mecha pioneer into a horizontal shmup!
The ability to change into three forms on the fly with varying properties gives the game a fun degree of control - probably the best thing it takes from the anime. Racing to destroy the Zentradi mothership as you transform strategically is the main highlight. Also, sadly, the only real highlight, as the game infinitely loops this one and only trademark dogfight sequence from the anime. The game's health degradation and end of round countdowns give it an engaging speedrun quality, but it's also very easy to screw yourself over early into the round with no method to bounce back.
Overall, not bad for an initial video game take on Macross! Also, some more Minmay music selections would've really won me over. I can only get the Uki-Uki-Waku-Waku feeling from listening to an 8-bit rendition of Shao Pai Long so many times.
