Founders' Fortune

released on Jul 19, 2019

Founders’ Fortune is a colony simulator that draws a lot of inspiration from the Sims: It incorporates a lot of creative building and puts a heavy focus on the colonists themselves, simulating thoughts, wishes, expectations, and traits. These psychological components have a tremendous influence on the game: Migrants will only consider your colony if you can fulfill the expectations of your inhabitants. Your colonists think of a lot of wishes and you need to fulfill at least some of them to keep them happy and productive. Like other colony games, there are resources to gather, technologies to unlock, and dangers to survive. Colonists get experienced in their professions unlocking new and faster ways to do their jobs.

Sims + colony sim mash up that doesn't manage to do either very well. I found it clunky, and it was difficult to get settlers to focus on a particular resource when it was needed. Some systems were pointlessly complex, (cant use a tool til you build each settler a personal tool shed to assign your tool with zzzz,) and it requires a more linear set of choices than it initially appears to stay alive, which is not fun to me.

This game is currently in the Humble Choice for April 2023, and this is part of my coverage of the bundle. If you are interested in the game and it's before May 2nd, 2023, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

The Sims with more resource management.

Founders’ Fortune has players managing a colony by moving characters around and assigning them tasks. In many ways, this reminds me of the Sims, though a lesser version of that. At the same time though, rather than working a job, players will have to manage a ton of resources and their characters' happiness, which will allow them to grow their colony by inviting new people into it.

The first hour though hasn’t made me want to continue. There’s a decent level of micromanagement here, but also where the Sims allow players to live out a different life, this feels like a typical crafting or survival game where the whole point is to amass as many resources as you can to build out a base. It’s an interesting idea but never felt exciting, especially with randomized wishes and desires

Pick this up if you want a version of the Sims but don’t want to buy it from EA. It’s a unique idea, I’ve heard people compare it to Rimworld, but it also just feels a bit cheap and lacking a significant level of polish. The tutorials for example just go to an HTML page, and the gameplay feels lacking.
