Gruntz

released on Feb 28, 1999

Take control of the Gruntz, a lovable and annoying batch of creatures trying to find their way home. After fleeing through a wormhole to avoid an attack by their evil cousins, the Disgruntled, they are stranged in a strange world and have to fight their way back home. The game is half-puzzle, half-strategy. Your Gruntz move around the map collecting items, activating switches and killing Disgruntledz. The overall goal in the single player, or Questz, game is to recover 36 pieces of the warpstone. There are four pieces scattered in each of 8 different worlds. Each level requires you to retrieve the warpstone piece and take it to the Gruntz king on that level.

Yo them Gruntz dumb as hell, lovable little f***ers but they aint that bright.

I had this in a three pack with Shogo mobile armor division and a racing game called speed demons. I won't lie though, i only wanted Gruntz.

A top down strategy, rts type puzzle thing with cartoony graphics and a humorous style. I remember loving it.

There were some great unit-types/weapons you could set your gruntz with, one of which was a giant drinking straw they'd clobber each other with, and then drink their remains. Brutal.

A game nobody else seems to have heard of, that I played many times as a child, often with my brother and sister. It's a fun, silly puzzle game with a lot of great levels, tools and weapons to mess around with. There was even a website with custom levels that I used to visit! I expect the dialogue drove my parents insane, with the constant "righto", "roger that". Lots of fond memories of this though and looking back, it was a pretty good game, which I can't say about all my childhood favourites!
