Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander is a retro sci-fi strategy RPG with a unique blend of base building, exploration and deep tactical JRPG style combat system with capital starships and their idiosyncratic officers, all captured in stunningly beautiful modernized pixel graphics. In Halcyon 6, an unknown alien force is carving a path of destruction towards Earth and you, as the Commander of an immensely powerful, newly discovered derelict starbase left behind by a precursor alien race, are the best chance for the New Terran Federation to stop the impending invasion.

Combat gets boring, but the game is fun.

Improves on the original release of the game with more features and less grind. Good art style. Amusing alien races. Fun combat revolves around inflicting and exploiting status effects or allowing them to linger. Has mod support. Officer traits can effect events or can be used to do things at the start of combat but they rarely end up being used and I didn't see many of them ever mentioned. Needs more events and officer personality. Many abilities don't tell you what they do, which makes for a bad combination with their skill tree. Poor opening focus on resource gathering and creating buildings that allow to to build and upgrade different things, almost all of it useless and the base design is basically XCOM. Ground combat is rare and has very little enemy variety, which makes the upgrades for ground abilities on the skill tree useless, would be nice if it had event based away team missions or if you ever interacted with the alien races that weren't just your enemies all the time. No alien officers, unless you are given one for a brief time in the early game and at during the end game. No challenge on the normal difficulty, and the higher difficulties just add to enemy health and damage which would likely just lead to more grinding. Good ideas but needs more events and features.

One of my favorite base building mechanics ever. Minor point but I adore the sound design, not even just the OST but all the 8-bit lasers and sound effects its awesome. I love turn based combat and this is a great example of that.
