Kanto Expansion Pak

released on Jan 07, 2024

The Kanto Expansion Pak is a ROM hack of Pokémon Red that expands the chromatic generation with scrapped Pokémon, regional variants, and cross-gen evolutions. It attempts to remain as faithful as possible to the game's design specification while doing this, ensuring that RBY OU does not deviate significantly from its roots. Thus, it doesn't include generational gimmicks like Mega Evolution, it simply aims to port what is technically possible in a vanilla Gen 1. It also aims to be compatible with any Gen 1 metagame, allowing tiers like Monotype, LC, NFE, Nintendo Cups, and more to be at least playable for the average user. The original Pokémon are left completely unchanged and balanced around.

Got absolutely enraptured by this. Keeps all the good parts of gen 1 jank and adds more onto it. I say "add" and not "fix" because there are still some things that aren't exactly functional... but to be honest that's the way I like it.

An interesting RBY hack that tries to build off of the ideologies that Game Freak likely had during Gen 1 rather than trying to modernize the game. There's a lot of content both from later gens and from RBY's scrapped ideas, adding things like Gorochu, the Fairy-type, and Bill's Lighthouse. It's extremely well-made for what it is, and if this blurb makes it sound at all interesting you'll absolutely love it.

A fun twist on a childhood fave. KEP relishes in the unique weirdness of Gen 1 Pokemon, drawing out its potential to give us a timeline where Lickilicky is arguably the strongest Pokemon in the world. Amazing.

A genuinely very different experience from your average Pokemon Red! The maps are changed with lots of references, the Gym Leaders are tougher, the postgame is impressive, several Gen 1 oddities are improved, and you have all these later and beta Pokemon that add to the game!

Sadly it's still a Gen 1 game with a lot of issues due to that but honestly this was a blast, great way to reexperience Kanto. Pendraken is my new favourite Pokemon,
