Letter To A Friend

Letter To A Friend is a short first-person experience by Christoph Frey about the unspeakable horror that creeps up on you at a nightly train station. Its visual references come from expressionistic silent movies and old analog recordings. The game was made in 48 hours during Asylum Jam 2015 and is a proof of concept regarding the visual aesthetics and atmosphere.

This is for the AsylumJam 2015 version.

This dev continues to amaze me (chrstphfr / Christoph Frey, since the name it's not on backloggd). Previously I played A Space Between which was more of a philosophical endeavor that I loved and completely took me by surprise. This is much simpler obviously, since it's for a game jam, but I love the experiment. It turns an everyday situation into a really creepy sequence thanks to the vintage film look coupled with the subtraction of light that gives it an unmatched mood, managing to be never-racking within a really short runtime. It's like 10 minutes long and also free, so give it a try if it looks good to you, this dev needs more notoriety.

I'm between a 6 and a 7, I think I'll go with a 6 because I think this concept deserved to be more fleshed out. I know there's a sequel for this, so I'll probably play that in the future.

While it bears the expressionistic horrors of unrestored silent cinema, "Letter to a Friend" is better compared to the likes of E. Elias Merhige's Begotten and the recent trend of analog horror. Frey uses the iconic train station (one of cinema's first icons) and its desolate space at night to conceive a nightmare penned with the intertitles of the protagonist's letter. The game is an incredible mood piece as it uses established spaces to craft painterly depictions of fear related to the cinematic frame and its projection. I am excited to see how Frey progresses with this aesthetic in his sequel project (seemingly incomplete beyond its initial episode released in 2021).

letter to a friend game jam thingy
its not the same game as letter to a friend farewell by the same developer but still interesting

also, I was the one who added it to IGDB :)
probably the last one for a while since I am giving up on adding adult/hentai games since their rules feel like they are inforced so arbitrarily
