The world is filled with energy crystals, which can be turned into monsters, using a special tin can. For centuries humans have trained the monsters to battle each other. However, a trainer named Cool Joe keeps breaking the rules of battle, and it's up to you to find out what he is up to. Collect crystals and turn them into monsters. Make your monster battle other monsters to gain experience and improve its abilities. You can also capture more crystals by winning battles. In addition to creating monsters, the crystals can be used by the monster to learn attacks and healing abilities. With over 60 monsters to collect, there is plenty to keep you busy. Try to find the truth regarding Cool Joe in LIL' MONSTER.

If you're a fan of classic monster-collecting RPGs like Pokémon, Lil' Monster for the Game Boy Color is a charming, albeit slightly derivative, alternative. With its colorful visuals, quirky creature designs, and a lighthearted story, it offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane. However, don't expect groundbreaking gameplay, as Lil' Monster doesn't do much to stand apart from its inspiration.

I was really looking forward to giving this a shot, the premise sounds simple enough that it could be a fun time.

I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to do in the beginning of this. The game dialogue and general description of the game itself say that you're supposed to fight monsters to get money and exp, but after the incredibly brief tutorial fight and then seemingly unwinnable fight against Cool Joe, I can't find any thing to fight, let alone do. You start out with 1 gold (or whatever the currency of the game's world is supposed to be), an instruction of "go fight stuff," and nothing to fight.

Pokémon Crystal came out the same year. I don't know what to tell you.
