SPOILERS for experience; none for story.

I played LIONKILLER through twice so far. It was wonderful, with surprises, hard choices, and great characters.

I’m so used to the adventure/story style of games being fully narrative-focused, it’s been a long time since I’ve played something with a fail state. I picked up my first try as I usually do- a goody two-shoes, trying to be good to people, trying to uphold the law. Given the history, it’s easy to see why that wouldn’t work so well. I made choices as I thought they served the story, trying to help those who could help me and serve the militia as well.

In the end, I died, and it was all over. I had to start from the beginning. So… there is a correct path? Is there a good ending here?

I played again, this time determined to die as soon as possible. I was trying to play in short bursts when I had time available. I spurned friends; I held onto my military power as much as possible, and this time… I survived. It wasn’t a good ending- but I didn’t die. So maybe this game is narratively focused after all?

I’ll have to play again. This time, I’ll choose with thoughts of the future. Knowing what’s to come, knowing who’s loyal, and who will take care of me. Maybe I’ll actually kill the lion this time.

UPDATE: the third time was wonderful. I was able to achieve an ending I was really happy about. Strategic, emotional, wonderful. Definitely recommend.
