Mago is a pretty fun game that reminds a lot of those platformer games from the Super Nintendo and Game Boy era, with a similar tone to games like Kirby. The truth is that it has impressed me, I expected less from it being a game from a YouTuber, and I thought it would be pretty average, but it has turned out to be a game with a lot of soul and its own essence that, even with its flaws, is perfectly enjoyable and a more than worthy tribute to retro games.

For starters, let's talk about how fun its gameplay is, which is actually a very familiar one, as our character (Pepe) is controlled just as well as Super Mario, but with the addition that when you step on an enemy you get an extra jump which makes it more entertaining, but also you also have a magic wand that allows you to paralyze enemies and interact with certain objects that glow purple. It's really fun to play, the character control feels polished.

There is money in this game, which is used to buy outfits and upgrades for the wand. One aspect that I found a little annoying at the beginning, in the style of games like Ocarina of Time, you must get a better bag to be able to store more money, so at the beginning of the game you get more money than you can fit, but ironically, as you progress further in the game, then it can become a little difficult to get money to be able to buy everything. And speaking of Zelda, our character has vitality points that we can increase by getting heart pieces.

In Mago there will be different worlds with different themes, and I like how each one has a different main theme. The music is good and catchy, they have that cheerful and happy touch which is just what this colorful game needs, as the graphics are very nice, a pixel art quite colorful and full of grace. Everything complements each other very well and has a very good retro style.

Speaking of the levels themselves, I found them to be very good, as none of them feel bland, they are quite fun and also have a certain level of difficulty and challenge, and if you like games with collectibles (like me) each level has its respective secret items which are used to unlock outfits or a more difficult level where you compete with a shadow to reach the goal. Another thing is that not all levels are traditional platforming, but there are also others that change the gameplay, and these types of levels are good and add variety to the game. The final bosses in each world don't disappoint either, each one has a lot of character that makes them memorable, but they are also fun and somewhat challenging battles.

On the map there are (in addition to the levels) some enemies, which are mini-levels or mini-bosses that help collect money or sometimes give us better rewards like a heart piece or among other collectibles. There are also some challenge towers... I have to say that I didn't like them at all and I highly recommend skipping them if you are going to play this game, I mean, the concept is good, as they consist of passing a series of challenges that if we complete them all in a row we will be rewarded with a prize. They become very fun and challenging the first few times, but if we want to get all the rewards within a tower we must pass the entire tower more times than anyone would like, which becomes somewhat tedious and very repetitive. I'm not exaggerating when I say that out of the total hours I spent on the game, half of it was spent on these towers. Honestly, I would have liked it more if this part of the game had been left solely and exclusively for grind money and as something optional that wasn't required to get 100%.

There's also the main city, which is where we can spend our money and also contains a lot of references to other YouTubers. While this is a cool detail, at the same time it also feels like a place saturated with characters you don't really know and can't even interact with in any way. Still, the secret battle that you can unlock there was cool (and disturbing).

Conclusion
Yes, I had a good time with this game, it really feels like an authentic experience you could have played on SNES/GBA. It's a remarkable game considering it's the first Pepe el Mago game, and I think they've done it very well even though there are some things that could be improved (like the challenge towers). It has been an enjoyable experience and I can see that Pepe captured a lot of his passion for videogames here. I will definitely be open to play any other game he and his studio make in the future, or even replay this one!
