MechAssault: Phantom War is one of the games in the popular MechWarrior series and is part of the BattleTech universe created by FASA. To this day, I still dont know what drove me to play this game to near death when I was a wee baby.
I guess the aspect of being able to leave out your mech was appealing to me and it being Mechassault inspired. Looking back now, I probably wouldn't play it again, those puzzles man. sudders

Microsoft really had a whole game series of bland mech fighting with HORRIBLE level design that was faithfully converted to the DS where the player controls blocky mechs with the D-PAD as the left thumbstick and the ABXY buttons as the right thumbstick. If that sounds like complete ass - it may come as a shock to you that it is worse because the Y axis is INVERTED.

WHY did this game implement a control scheme that was unpopular with console gamers onto a fucking handheld console with touch control capabilities? Because the game devs were still smoking that elitist shithead pack.

If you developed the controls for this game, meet me at these coordinates (39.0973° N, 82.9860° W) so I can fight your ass.

I love and respect the sheer novelty of this game. It fills at least two hyper specific niches on the DS that I wanted more of:
Third person shooters
Mech games

Sadly, the level design is so top tier bland and the enemies are the biggest and dumbest bullet sponges, you never really get that full experience you're looking for. There's a fair amount of cheap deaths.

If the weapons just felt like there was more impact here, I think it would have made a huge difference. As a whole, I don't hate this at all. I still liked it. It hits a lot of very Me things. But it's very flawed.
