Myth: The Fallen Lords takes some really big swings at the RTS genre (although Bungie considers it a "real time tactics" game) with some really interesting stuff, but wow, it's got some rough patches. I've never really clicked with real-time games before (quite frankly, I'm really bad at them), but found this one to be pretty enjoyable.

As per the genre in 1997, the pathfinding is pretty terrible, units will constantly get caught on each other, and even when you guide units through the "formations" system, they'll get stuck a lot. Generally though, the gameplay offers some top tier carnage, the units you have access to are varied and interesting, and the enemies have some fun tricks up their sleeves too.

And, well, on the topic of carnage, this game's graphics and gore is seriously incredible. Full 3D terrain (with sprite based units) and all sorts of really nice details to give battles this incredible feeling "oomph" to them. For instance, when a dwarf throws a bomb into a wave of thrall, the bomb will detonate, blackening the ground with ash and scattering undead viscera across the field. The viscera's even has physics modelling, so the explosion will launch it high and far, and potentially even towards another unit, hurting them on impact. For lack of a better phrase, it's gnarly as hell, even today in 2024.

Story is also... there. It's mostly told through journal entries at the start of every mission, with a few scraps of dialogue from some major characters. It's nothing terribly impressive, but it has some interesting worldbuilding and is cool enough that it justifies its own existence.

Level design is where things begin to go a bit wrong though, there's some really cool levels where the combat system absolutely shines, and some others that seem nearly impossible without a guide or downright esoteric in their completion methods. Generally, the game is really tough, much more than I expected even on "Normal" difficulty, couldn't imagine playing on the "Heroic" or 'Legendary" difficulties. (oh... that's where that came from)

Despite some pretty frustrating levels, Myth offers a pretty damn good RTS game with some awesome combat and violence, so:

7/10, what the FUCK is up with the dwarves

Really addicting RTS and the lack of base building and resource management and solely focus on the combat makes you really strategize and plan out your attacks. Also classic Bungie story telling and world building

Epic game, bungie at its finest!

Nearly unplayable now in light of modern control standards, but you have to appreciate how hard it was going for it.
