This game seriously rocks. It’s your typical rogue like for the most part. This means going through random floors, receive random relics & special moves and when you die you start a new run but you can make yourself stronger permanently. The way the game combines those elements is what makes it so interesting.

The game has different floor types, you gradually unlock more with every run. It’s not just beating enemies but how and when. You can see the entire branching path, so you can plan ahead and there is some thinking involved. Even though the game feels challenging early on, you still get some control over what floors to avoid in terms of type and challenge. Then you have the relics and special moves. Relics are your passive skills. There are tons of them and they’re very fun to experiment with. Every time you start a run, you get to select the relics to take with you. That selection is random and you can find more relics during your run. You can focus on certain styles that can change the way you play. More are gradually unlocked. Special moves are 1 special you get for each outfit and you can unlock more specials during runs (I think there are more than 4 but you can equip 2 of them max excluding your outfit special). You’re going to use an outfit’s special often. The rest are very powerful moves that cost a lot of energy to use. It can also be risky to use them until you upgrade them with gems and relics. They can also become far more powerful when you keep upgrading them. Lastly, the outfits themselves are the game’s permanent progression system that you get to keep with all runs. You basically level up your outfits by gaining stars. With more stars you can start with more relics. This makes runs easier.

When you combine all those elements, you create a very fulfilling experience. It starts difficult but you’re expected to learn enemy patterns and how the game works. The game also has bosses that always appear in the same order and have the same moves. Even though the floors are random, the bosses are not. They have phases where you need to avoid their attacks and you have limited moments to damage them. I loved the bosses personally but some might not like the limited time you’re given to damage them. You always feel like you’re making good progress even if you die. You constantly unlock new floor types, relics, special moves, learn enemy and boss moves etc. And it doesn’t feel overwhelming. This game feels very balanced if you take your time and are willing to experiment. I’m personally planning on playing longer even though I ‘completed’ the game. I’d like to try out the other 2 outfits (3 total), fill up the codex (in-game bestiary) as much as possible and experiment with the modifiers. Modifiers can make the game far easier or tougher. Do yourself a favour and give the demo (prologue) a try if you’re interested in any way.
