Paper mario pro mode walked, so MQ, Dark Star etc could run.
It's an unfinished hack, as, gradually, the amount of new content decreases (i think Chapter 7 has no new content at all?). Thus, the difficult curve is very steep in the beginning, and flattens out radically at around Chapter 4.
Chapter 2 and 3 include pretty rad changes to the desert (which is still in MQ, btw) and the forest.
Historically, it's more of a tech demo for the (first) PM64 mod tool Star Rod.
A milestone, but as of 2024, I wouldn't replay it - there's simply way better mods out there both in terms of gameplay and design.
