Pop 'n Bounce

Pop'n Bounce is a puzzle game similar to Break Out; the player must bounce a ball off a paddle in order to knock out a wall of sprites. However, in Pop'n Bounce, the sprites are of assorted living creatures instead of bricks.

A neat little Arkanoid/Breakout clone with some falling block DNA mixed in.
Gameplay is more or less what you'd expect from that description. Once a block (usually in the form of animals or anthropomorphic objects such as tiki statues and UFOs) are destroyed, the blocks above it fall down if they can fit in the grid-style space left. After falling down the blocks then merge together if theyre of similar size and color à la PuyoPuyo. Cool concept, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

Rarely do the PuyoPuyo elements get to shine, mostly due to how limited control there is over the ball in Arkanoid-esque game. A majority of the level design also doesnt lend itself for combo oriented gameplay. Even after dumping a few hours into this and wasnt able to find a way to consistently play strategically - basically relying on luck the whole time for combos. By the end I just gave up and started treating combos as small bonues. As a result I'm left with the feeling this is a gimmicky clone, as opposed to have a unique identity.

Or maybe I'm just a scrub. Eitherway, still worth a playthrough if you enjoy the games its drawing inspiration from.
