This might be contender for the worst game I've ever played. It started so well but became so broken it was just grueling to get through.

It's apparent that a great amount of love was poured into Scrap Garden.
Unfortunately, that doesn't save it from being just a little bad at everything that it does...

Finds some bits of charm amidst the sloppy execution. Very frustrating hit detection.

You play as Canny, who just may be the last functioning robot. 54 years ago, something happened to shut down the world. Now, it's up to Canny to explore the desolate city, find help, and restart the power.

Visuals

Scrap Garden is a 3D platformer set in a robot city, and I absolutely loved the way it looks! Canny is adorable. He looks like a trashcan, but cute. And despite the city being dead, it feels very full. The stuck bots are still around, just still, but Canny can...interact with them. We get a variety of landscapes, and while they're not the most detailed, I still enjoyed exploring them.

The enemies are scary. I legit got jumpscared by the first giant spider, and a couple after that. I felt like I left the adorable robot game and entered Little Nightmares with robots. However, their animations are...not there. They're like lumps that just move slowly across the screen. It's very off looking. Especially the bosses.

Sound Effects + Music

Scrap Garden does have voice acting. There's a narrator to introduce us to Canny and the world, and he has a few lines when you enter new areas. Canny just makes beeps and bloops, and sounds adorable. I have a thing for cute robots. Canny will meet other robots who survived along they way and they are fully voice acted.

The music is actually really good too, especially for the spooky sections. The sound effects for the enemies grossed me out. That spider scuttle gave me shivers.

Gameplay + Controls

Being a 3D platformer, expect some wonkiness. Canny controls well enough. He can walk, jump, double jump, and throw items. His jumping does feel very floaty and was awkward to get use to. He also seems to jump higher than you'd expect. Like the jump animation falls short of where he actually lands, which is weird. But it means you can get to higher places, so whatever.

The camera controls are fine. Definitely better than Super Mario 64, but that's not a difficult feat. You have full control over the camera when Canny is in an open area. There are levels where the camera is at a fixed position though. I did have a few moments where the camera got stuck, spun out of control, then went back to normal.

Something odd about the gameplay is that when you find a required item, instead of picking it up and taking it, you just teleport to where you need to use, and get a cutscene. And there was one point where Canny is told to find another way to the next area, but instead of that being actual gameplay, it's a short cutscene.

Replayability

Scrap Garden is a super short game, so it wouldn't take much to play it through again to get any missed achievements that require a second playthrough. However, it's a bit too wonky to want to play again. And the version I played didn't even have achievements.

Overall

Scrap Garden is such a weird game for me. I adored it despite all of it's issues, but it does have noticeable issues. I'm glad I played it though.

very cute game full of mistakes, questionable design and bugs.
