Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix - Gold Edition

released on Feb 25, 2003

Soldier of Fortune II: Gold Edition is a two-CD set containing the original Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix with enhanced gameplay and additions. Players take the role of mercenary John Mullins as he hunts down and eliminates bio-terrorists that are threatening the world with a deadly plague, the Gemini Virus. The Gold Edition contains more than 55 levels, eleven new maps, a new infiltration multiplayer game mode, an expanded arsenal including weapons such as the SIG 552 rifle, MP5SD, and Silver Talon pistol, and an anti-cheat "PunkBuster" modification. A single-player random mission generator promises diversity in gameplay and offers four mission types (escape, assassination, infiltration, and demolition), varied locations (desert, hills, jungle, plains, or snow), night or day settings, four difficulty levels, and time limit options. The original Quake III: Arena engine has been enhanced with GHOUL II technology that provides improved animation and more carnage with 36 damage and 16 dismemberment zones. Other features of the graphical upgrade include per-pixel hit detection, new facial animations and full skeletal soft-skinned models.

Soldier of Fortune II might be one of the most lackluster sequels I have ever played recently, as it seemingly tries to improve the somewhat perfect gameplay loop of the first game only to make it much worse.

My problems with the first title were mostly nitpicks, like the lack of gun variety and no breathing rooms between the action, but I did not wanted these to be the main features for the sequel! There are lots and lots of weapons and way more story this time around, only to drag this game down to the gutter with it's overly boring narrative and lackluster writing.

What makes me really angry though is the fact that somehow they managed to ruin the combat, resulting in this floaty but gory mess that does not feel good at all, and it manages to disappoint over and over again.

I should have guessed that this game was nowhere close to the original, when the first big mission featured a turret section twice to be honest. I really love Raven Software but this game is very weak compared to their other titles.

I've not played the campaign, I just have so many fond memories of watching my dad play the multiplayer at midnight. I still remember the first time he let me play it. Multiplayer is arcade-y but still tactical and so much fun.
