It is no secret that I love Raven Software as a company. Their games are made with love and passion, despite being somewhat outdated at certain areas. Their catalogue of excellent titles consists mainly first person shooters, and I mainly grew up with those too. As I finished with their Heretic and Hexen titles, I ventured forward into a much riskier territory, a game which predated the modern military FPS wave of games, and did it way before COD.

Soldier of Fortune is based on the magazine of the same name and features John Mullins, a real person, who needs to save the earth from an incoming missile attack by The Order. As you can see, SoF does not feature a very clever or amazing story, in fact, it is very straightforward with it's plot, as the game oozes the atmosphere and silly nature of the 80's.

What makes SoF great is the gameplay, the combat and the gruesome death animations, because this game is horribly gory, and every shot makes the enemies react in different ways. You can shoot limbs of, you can shoot them in the neck, head, groin or even shoot their guns out of their hands, anything is possible. In a genre where your main "interaction" with the world is a gun, this responsiveness is amazing, and if you consider the fact that objects react to your shots too, it becomes a stellar gimmick.

You need to blaze through 10 missions, and all of them contain 3 sections separated by loading screens. These are all varied and offer great combat sequences. What drags this game down is the lack of variety in terms of guns and enemies, and the fact that it is super short. While the experience itself is dense, I would have loved more filler mixed in with the nonstop action. There are segments where you need to visit The Shop and these quiet sections were really appreciated.

Overall, I think SoF is a great game especially in smaller doses, because you will not burn out from the action that way. The GoG version of the game works fine on Win10 and I did not even need to use any mods to enchance the experience.

I Really Tried To Play It But It Ultimately Was Too Dated & Confusing.
