Spec Ops: Ranger Elite

released on Jan 12, 2001

Spec Ops: Ranger Elite is a tactical shooter with an emphasis on strategy. As in earlier releases in the Spec Ops series, the player takes control of two operatives from a small group of highly trained Army Rangers in this next title from Runecraft and Take 2. Each member of the group has a specialty so choosing the right duo for a given mission is an important factor of success. The action takes place in 3D-rendered environments as the player guides the characters from a third-person perspective. In the single-player version of the game, the player takes the role of one soldier while the computer guides the other.

I have a core memory of my dad letting me skip kindergarten (!) to play this. Spec Ops: Ranger Elite is in fact part of the same series as Spec Ops: The Line, but it portrays the brutality of war in a slightly different way. By that, I mean this is a clunky, low budget third person shooter. The soundtrack sticks out prominently in my mind because it's largely one song - this unnerving, droning ambient music that plays in every stage. I'll always cherish this game, but I feel like even when I was a walking fetus I could tell it was mediocre.

Played this with my friend until he had to move to Australia. What a F*** noobs we were. I managed to buy it later, and mastered on my own.

I used to play this with my dad. It has heavy nostalgia, but we had lots of fun. FIRE GO!
