A 2D fantasy Hack&Slash with an upgrade system. I don't consider this to be an RPG in any way. Pretty straighforward regarding progression and advancing the story. The fighting is too much button mashing for my taste, and the bosses are more of a "bullet sponge" than a real challenge.

Not a particularly bad game, but not worth the time either.

Seen as bargain bin Vanillaware Ltd., Sword of the Vagrant is an indie bet for hack-and-slash lovers with some Metroidvania elements; a rudimentary adventure that doesn't shine in its plot, either due to the clumsy English translation or convoluted exposition, but rather one with some promising foundations in gameplay.

Despite finding it mediocre, throughout Vivian's quest, I felt compelled to unlock abilities, battle bosses, and equip new weaponry, finding enjoyment in this simple and linear loop. That said, despite some rough edges, Sword of the Vagrant presents you with decent combat, beautiful artistic style, and a medium duration of twenty hours to complete everything.

Perhaps a sequel will do justice and improve all the aspects mentioned above.

The grocery store ice cream compared to the vanillaware soft serve. Sure it looks and has similar tastes but it's missing the creamy goodness and smooth feel.

Sword of the Vagrant is an average 2D side scroller action game that outside of it's fantastic vanillaware inspired visuals lacks real polish and balancing that hold it back. Enemies go down very easily and there isn't much variety to the combat. Some selectable unlockable skills don't add enough to keep coming back for the combat. The level design is pretty good though with a good mix of exploration and following the map. The visuals are great like I said but honestly there is very much samey enviroments and characters that after awhile it starts to blend togather a bit. Balance is horribly out of wack where potions and mana refills are plentiful and makes battles quite a joke as there isn't any real skill needed or involved in boss battles. Then there are shop keepers who charge such high prices for the most worthless of gear and items it makes you wonder why the even bothered as weapon and items drops from chests and enemies is so plentiful and quite frankly better. The story is really sloppy and all over the place and due to the games lack of budget or effort is so bland and boring you wish you could skip it. If going for the achievents while not hard at all, it does feel like such an unessary grind for no reason. All in all Sword of the vagrant isn't that bad but it really doesn't do anything special or great but for it's now lot asking price it might be a solid playthrough over a weekend if not just for the visuals and maybe a couple of the music tracks. Just don't go in expecting the world and it's alright.
