Syndrome

released on Oct 06, 2016

You wake up on a spaceship, dazed and confused from the effects of cryosleep, and begin to search for the rest of the crew. Where could they have gone? All too suddenly, you discover that most of them are dead, and those still alive are… changed. With Syndrome, Camel 101 takes first person survival horror back to its roots. In the dark confines of the ship, you look for ways to defend yourself. There are a few weapons scattered about, but nowhere near enough ammunition to deal with all the transformed monstrosities. To survive and uncover the events that took place while you were asleep, you can’t always face your enemies head on; sometimes hiding and breathing as noiselessly as possible is your best course of action. Careful resource management is a key part of Syndrome, but so is learning your enemies’ behavior. What will attract their attention? What will give you a few precious seconds to pass by undetected? Take note―each misstep could be deadly.

So this game. You know, I got this game mostly going blind and was kind of hoping for mostly a similar horror game to STASIS which has very little enemies and jumpscares. Of course unfortunately it wasn't similar at all and mostly just jumpscares, scary enemies and sneaking.

In this game you actually have the option to fight back at the enemies, which I do appreciate, but I failed to do and I mostly ran away screaming in horror.

Something that I did not really like, was the constant backtracking. You run into an obstacle on one level and then you have to go to a another level to clear it, but surprise surprise, to unlock the solution to the first obstacle you need to again go to another level.

The save system does not really help with this problem, because if you die on your way to the save point you get loaded back into your previous save which was at the previous save point. It kinda felt like there was not enough save points.

Story-wise the game was actually pretty interesting. An alien artifact takes control of a crew and you, the hero, wake up and you have to "save the day" but at some point you get to know that the story isn't that simple as you'd think. I don't want to spoil the "surprise" so I wont write about it here, but I did enjoy it.

Long story short, I enjoyed the game, BUT (a big but) the game gave me way too much anxiety to focus on the thing I like doing the most, taking screenshots. At the final stages I had to mute the game (yes, all the audio) and play the game through watching a guide, because I was so scared that I couldn't continue without knowing what was coming.

Some would call that cheating, I call it a solution to my scared baby problem. I also forgot to take pretty screenshots.... :( I recommend it to those who like horror.

If you get scared and anxiety really easily, you shouldn't get this game.
