Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up is a fighting video game for the Wii and PlayStation 2 video game consoles. It was developed by Game Arts in cooperation with Mirage Studios and released by Ubisoft in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2009. The game is a 4-player 2.5D fighting game, similar to the Super Smash Bros. series. During battle, players attempt to KO opponents by depleting their life bar, knocking them off the stage or into traps.Characters are color-coded on-screen via a glow effect to help players keep track of their character (a feature that can be toggled on and off in the options screen). Like Super Smash Bros., the game features many customizable options for battles. The game stresses interaction with the environment, and stages in the game feature traps, changes to the stage itself and interactive elements. The gameplay system also features items, including life-restoring pizza and ninja skills that grant players special abilities like fire breathing and electrical shields. The modes for this game are Arcade, Battle Royal, Survival, Tournament, Swap-Out, Practice, and Mission Mode, as well as an online mode for four players and mini-games. Players can collect 'shells' during battles or mini-games and use them to unlock special features, including trophies that other players can win in online tournaments. Arcade mode features animated cut scenes illustrated by Mirage Studios artists.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up attempts to bring the chaotic fun of Super Smash Bros. to the world of the heroes in a half shell. While featuring a decent roster of TMNT characters and some flashy attacks, the gameplay feels less polished and balanced than its inspiration. The single-player story mode is surprisingly bland, and the overall experience lacks the lasting appeal of Nintendo's brawler. Fans of the Turtles might find Smash-Up enjoyable for a short while, but it ultimately doesn't capture the same addictive magic.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have etched themselves in the pop culture space as long-lasting, multi-generational treasure. We've had Turtle things of varying quality every decade from movies, cartoons, video games, and this well just won't ever run dry, it seems.

Unfortunately, this specific game is not a fun Turtle thing. It's not a cool Turtle thing. It's an "okay if I'm being generous" kind of Turtle thing. It's a few few good ideas in a game that's mired by a bland presentation and an overall hollow experience.

It doesn't help that even in playing this game in 2024, it feels just as dated as it did back then. As a PS2 game released in 2009, it was already in an unwinnable battle. Yet, the depressing thing is that it still feels like a 2009 PS2 game with or without the necessary context, and because of that, this game had no business being released in this state.

I remember being a kid seeing all the ads for this that would boast about you could create “limitless matchups” just for it to come out and have the same roster size as Smash Bros on the N64. That is, unless you bought the Wii version, in which case I hope you like Rabbids.

Sakurai worked on this lmao

I'm embarassed to say I owned this over smash brawl
