The main protagonist is the former crusader Theoderich von Akenburg, who fifteen years ago put his sword aside and never picked it up again. But fate had other plans for him. During the last crusade, Theoderich and his friend Ulrich von Grevel found a fragment of Aaron's staff, an ancient artifact hiding a powerful weapon that in the wrong hands could threaten the entire world. Unaware of the impending danger, Theoderich's peaceful life ends when he receives a visit from the monk Malcom.
The unexpected guest tells him about Ulrich's obsession to find the remaining pieces of Aaron's staff. With no other choice, the hero must once again pick up his sword and embark on a journey to find and stop his old friend. Fortunately, the hero is not doomed to go it alone; along the way, he is joined in battle by other daredevils such as the knight Reinhard von Kempten and the ambitious mercenary Grimhild Eidottr.
