Total Annihilation

released on Sep 30, 1997

What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds. The Core and the Arm have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle for domination. Both sides now crippled beyond repair, the remnants of their armies continue to battle on ravaged planets, their hatred fuelled by over four thousand years of total war. This is a fight to the death. For each side, the only acceptable outcome is the complete elimination of the other.

Ah, here's the reason why I barely played Starcraft. This was my RTS high watermark for years! And the way Cavedog kept pumping out new units, totally butchering any hope of balance, haha. Good times

Got this game when I was already spoiled by SupCom... I'm sure it's a good game, there's just better out there now.

one of my favorite games.

I've played it on and off since it came out. I'll admit that Planetary Annihilation and of course Supreme Commander have somewhat superseded it in terms of polished gameplay and graphical intensity, but nothing can really just match the all-out weapons grade oodles and oodles and oodles of mechs and tanks just plowing towards each other. you can have thousands of units opening fire in endless barrages on each other. a magnificent fucking explosion of madness. advanced airplanes. turtle defenses. naval bombardment from half the map away. the game has endless room for spectacle on an insane grand scale.

does the pathfinding AI suck? sure! do you once in awhile get totally screwed when your enemy blows out your delicately balanced requirements? hoo boy betcha! do some units take a bizarre amount of time to figure out where the fuck they're going, so much so that it merits a second mention? buster, you better believe! but god damn what a game. what a spectacular fucking journey into exploding robots by the hundreds. from titans to tiny warbots.
