Zoom 909

released on Dec 31, 1982

Zoom 909 is an arcade game developed by Sega for VCO Object arcade hardware. It was released worldwide in 1982, however after obtaining a license for Buck Rogers, western versions of the game became known as Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom. Both Zoom 909 and Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom are largely the same game minus some minor graphical differences. Though most home ports of the game are based on Planet of Zoom, Zoom 909 was brought to the Japanese MSX in 1983 and SG-1000 in 1985. These versions take more liberties with the formula, introducing a top-down stage as level 3.

Right off the bat we're doing a trench run and shooting down alien scum. I've heard others say that killing these buggers is difficult but I found them to be well telegraphed; there's three levels top, middle, and bottom and each has a very specific animation. After exiting the trench you're in open space making it much easier since you don't have walls to avoid. The third Androids style level is the most difficult but as long as you get an invincibility power-up you've got it made because they spawn like crazy. Boss level is super easy, and goes down within 10 seconds. Go through the loop again, and you've got yourself a simple game. Fine!
