Great feudal Japan aesthetics with messy level design, bland town exploration, and 2 separate cases of grinding money.

Some funny scenes in between areas or transitions, varied enemies.

Levels are often short and simplistic, Goemon is the only character as player one and he is the most boring of the group in later games, time wasting areas between stages where you try to find where to go. The hit detection is abysmal where you will hit, miss, get hit, and avoid being hit by things that clearly did the opposite, made worse by projectiles having a shadow under them making it even more obvious where things are supposed to be.

Shame this was the only SNES one to be released outside of Japan, it is easily the worst of the four and the only one I wouldn't recommend.

Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the SNES is a half brawler/half platformer game with quirky humor and a very japanese setting and style. It's very challenging (maybe unfairly so) which can make it quite frustrating at times. Not particularly recommended outside of Goemon megafans.

As an aside, its soundtrack deserves a shoutout for being incredible and super underappreciated.
