Finally, sonic can rest in peace

Baby's first visual novel
Love to see fan-made works be published by Sega, and it's lovingly made too
Although I really don't understand what the point of the Sonic mini games was, I mean isn't a crime solving game supposed to challenge your mind, I get Danganronpa did this but that was also my main problem with that game
Give me Phoenix Wright style, I have to figure it out myself dammit!

wow it's soon gonna be a year since I played this through!
ironically one of the best received Sonic games in recent memory and I think it deserves all the praise it got. yes, it may only be a short and sweet visual novel who isn't trying to tell the most deep story ever, but has so much stuff going for it.
the presentation is great, the UI and the art is so fucking good, I just love the artstyle, the music is also pretty good!! the plot is kind of an excuse to just have members of Sonic's varied cast interact together but it doesn't feel shallow and the writing helps create a fun and engaging murder mystery (cause yes there's a true culprit) that's really funny and oozing with charm! and in typical Sonic fashion, the story's more serious aspects just radiate a sense of earnestness I can't resist (which you should be accustomed to if you're familiar with this franchise).
also the more "active" gameplay sections are simple but really fun!!
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is probably the best April Fools' gift I'll ever play.

This is one of the biggest surprises the Sonic franchise has thrown at me. A Sonic murder mystery visual novel? For free? In this economy?

If you're looking for a head-scratcher like Danganronpa or Ace Attorney you won't find it here, which is fine, this game isn't trying to be one. The strength of this game lies on having these characters interact in a more down-to-earth setting, with the player character serving as a perfect contrast to this crazy cast by being "ordinary" in comparisons, while still being a worthwhile character that I personally became fond towards.

There's some small gameplay segments during interrogations with a more classic Sonic gameplay, they happen every time the player character needs to collect their thoughts to prepare an argument. They are a good change of pace even if they interrupt the flow a bit, their implementation reminded me a bit of some mechanics you'd see in the Ace Attorney games, where they abstract a stressful situation into a minigame.

Regarding the graphics and the music, they are amazing. The comic book art style perfectly fits the tone of the story, and there's something about the color palette of these drawings that is just perfect. The music is really jazzy and fits every situation, you can feel that Ace Attorney (yes, again) inspiration coming through in the interrogation music, and they nailed it.

This game is awesome, if you either like visual novels or would love to see the Sonic cast in a different and fun setting you HAVE to play this.

Wasn't expecting THIS to be the first game I beat in 2024! (Note: NO major spoilers in this review.)

I got Sonic brainrot in Jan 24, but it took surprisingly long for me to get to the short, free Visual Novel they released the previous year. For those unaware, this game is an April Fools joke, but of the best possible kind: yes, it's an actual mystery VN set in the Sonic universe, and the production values for a free game are off the charts (just look at all the names in the credits!) Art is simple but on-point, and there's an original soundtrack of 42 SONGS?! (This game even has UNUSED music!)

Gameplay mostly works like a typical mystery VN, if you've played Ace Attorney you'll be at home here. Collect evidence, use it against suspects. Don't expect any complex deductions though. You have at most 3 pieces of relevant evidence to choose from, and the correct answer is usually obvious. There is no fail state, you just keep trying until you get the right answer. Sometimes the main character's line of logic isn't even obvious until after played a THINK! minigame.

Oh right, those are a thing. They're short "endless runner" segments where the MC asks "what would Sonic do?" They remind me a lot of old Flash browser games from my childhood, but be warned: they get surprisingly tricky later on, ESPECIALLY the "final boss". Fortunately there are options to tone them down if you're not an action fan.

But back to the logic thing. The plot is simple, but there's a few fun twists. My main gripe is you're playing as "the Watson" in the detective dynamic, and as someone who doesn't know the Sonic cast. While this makes it a good game for newcomers, it means Tails (the actual detective) is often several leaps of logic ahead of your character (as he's both smarter and knows the cast personally), and it's hard to be on the same page as him without hindsight. An example is the very first puzzle, which is "solved" when you present evidence that's totally meaningless from the protagonist's perspective, but is obvious to either a Sonic fan or a friend of Sonic's in-universe, leaving Tails to connect the dots. This doesn't happen often, but it bothers me as a die-hard mystery fan when it does.

The real strength of this game is the characters. Despite only being 2-ish hours, this is some of the best writing for the extended Sonic cast in years. The two standouts to me are Amy and Shadow. The former has been "fixed" for years, but there've been complaints about her becoming too down-to-earth. This game makes her hyper and energetic again, WITHOUT making her annoying or mean. Shadow, meanwhile, has one big moment, but it's a small one I'd like to focus on: at one point he shows genuine respect for Tails' mechanical abilities. Speaking of, I like how this game shows Tails' optimism through the lens of a more jaded viewpoint character, and the effect it has.

In summary, don't expect peak Ace Attorney, but an April Fools joke has no right to go this hard.

I did it. I found a way to be bad at a visual novel. Now I have mastered the art of being terrible at every genre of game.

genuinely the only good official sonic game since mania plus

For some reason, this random joke game has the best characterization the series has gotten since 2008. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. As a game, it's super basic and I don't enjoy visual novel type games at all. This one will only appeal to hardcore sonic fans.

This must be the fastest I've ever uninstalled a game in my entire life. Literally the very first frame of the game, showing someone's DeviantArt furry OC - which was supposed to be ME - made me almost vomit up the oranges I just ate. I tried, I really tried, to soldier through. But within two text boxes I had realized I was either too old, too cynical, or not as ... you know... as the typical Sonic fan to suffer through this sickly saccharine garbage. I feel violated for what I saw and what I saw was very little. This game might be free, but I don't think I could play it even if you paid me.

The game was quite the delightful little diversion. It's a fairly short game but really draws out the fun of these characters' interactions with this particular premise. The running stages used to break up the VN parts was fine in small doses but I could have done without them at the end. Can't complain too much since the game was free and it's always great when an April Fools' joke ends up something quality.

This was unironically a very decent Sonic game for it being an april fools joke when it came out. The game is a Visual Novel and it plays like a Danganronpa/Ace Attorney lite as its very simple with gathering evidence and interrogating the characters. There is even a Danganronpa similar mechanic of logic dive how your character figures out the mystery. The art and soundtrack of this game is high quality and you can obviously tell there was a lot of effort put into the game.

The best Sonic game to come out since 2011.

this game is just dumb fun which is honestly amazing its like a one day game at most but i had fun the whole time. loved seeing all the characters interact

I love when I cop the twist to a story right off the bat. Even if it's a kid's game and probably exceedingly obvious to everyone else as well.

Very cute. Lots of great references, the best presentation we've gotten for a lot of these characters... ever - in a game, that is - fun to look at, and the most I've been allowed to dig through trash cans outside of Pokémon.

This might just be because I'm tired and played this after getting off work, but man my eyes are ready to not look at things after having played this. The segments of actual gameplay that's somewhat like Sonic 3D Blast's special stages really started to bother my eyes. They were decent, but the angle being isometric instead of behind Sonic probably made me mess up more than usual.

Anyway, this was really charming and had some good laughs, I hope something else likes this happens again - maybe shift out some of the supporting characters for others of Sonic's friends?

what an absolute SLAM DUNK of a visual novel!!! this is so incredibly worth your time. it doesn't overstay its welcome, has charm in spades, is a lot of fun (adding a lot of new mechanics to the visual novel structure), and has a surprising amount of style and aesthetic vision.

got absolutely NOTHING bad to say about this lil number! super fun!

Fun little distraction for a few hours, doesn't do anything crazy though.

REALLY good sonic game! it's a simple visual novel game but it's so charming at the same time especially for people who are very familiar with the characters. the art is so beautiful and the small minigame you play is pretty cool. DEINITELY recommend!

My partner is a big fan of VNs, so when Sega released this April Fool’s Day surprise a week and a bit ago, we knew we had to take a look. Her and I had a lot of fun playing through it and voicing the characters ourselves, and it took us about 3 hours to play through it.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is, as the name implies, a story about the murder of Sonic the Hedgehog! Sonic and his friends are all abord a special event train for Amy Rose’s birthday party, and a murder mystery is the event in question! You play a gender ambiguous staff member aboard this train, and it’s your first day on the job, so it’s your duty to make sure everything goes smoothly! But when things start going weird, it begins to look like everything may not be as it seems aboard your murdery mystery train, so you team up with detective Tails to try and solve the case! The end result is a really delightful story! It’s a cute and funny story full of good humor and fun references for those who are big Sonic fans (but still make for fun jokes in themselves for those who aren’t as familiar with it).

The gameplay is a visual novel, but it’s more like a little Ace Attorney-style adventure than a long book with pictures. The mystery itself is far from Ace Attorney-levels of difficult, but it’s still a load of fun either way. Interspersed with those VN segments are parts where you “get your thoughts in order”, which here means an infinite runner that’s themed like the old Sonic 2-style bonus stages (though mercifully without the 3D element). The best part of those action segments is that, while they get pretty damn tough by the end, you have a ton of tools at your disposal in the menu to make them as easy and forgiving as you wish if you’d rather just have a VN rather than a platforming challenge.

The presentation is great! The character portraits do an excellent job of getting across the emotions of familiar characters and they complement the writing wonderfully. The music is also very fun, and the pixel art in the infinite runner sections is very nice and retro-Sonic-y as well.

Verdict: Highly Recommended. A truly excellent game, no two ways about it. It’s not just a funny April Fool’s joke. It’s genuinely a really fun and well-written VN, and one of Sega’s best considered and put together Sonic projects in years. If you like VNs and especially if you like Sonic, this is a free game that is 1000% worth your time and then some.

ALL THE INTERESTS WRAPPED IN ONE!
Amazingly fun game, especially for a april fools game, love it to bits. You get to see more of the conductor and his wife in a brief cameo for the winter comics from IDW. Highly recommend playing it if you're a sonic fan and love the lore.

tragic events in history: sonic's death. while boarding a train he got shot in the ass and F*CKING DI-

this one almost fulfills my dream of a sonic game where the characters are written a la jehtt or snapcube videos. tmosth (wow, that's an ugly acronym) has certified fanfiction vibes. it goes places. it appreciates that every sonic character has depth, and it made me squeal like a little girl nearly the entire time i played it.

first impressions- the character costumes are SOOOOOOOOOO cute. knuckles, my favorite sonic character (i was holding my knuckles plush through the whole playthrough), doesn't get much screentime but he's got this silly cowboy getup that make me giggle. amy has this super pretty frilly dress that pops way more than her typical fit; i'd think it apt for how confident and pinkie-pie-esque she is here. none of that lovey-dovey sonic-obsessed BS! i love it. the rouge costume & characterization are also fan-freaking-tastic. deadass one of my FAVORITE CHARACTERS EVER. an absolute queenie. pretty as heckin heck (i might have a giant crush). stylin' on everyone in her mondo cool jacket 'n jeans combo. i'm not entirely convinced she didn't sneak a gun onto the train. however, though she might be my favorite character, my favorite costume is tails'. it's so simple but he's just so gosh darn adorable. the little detective smans gets a big spotlight in this here murder mystery and i think he deserved it bigtime. he's degraded to a nonautonomous sidekick too often in the main games, so seeing his linux user ass investigate around and nerd out about books made my heart uber happy. every time his puppydog eyes sprite came on scream i SCREAMED. my only initial complains are the lack of silver (and 06 callbacks in general) and the sonic-forces-fursona-ass-inself-insert-oc main character, but @Cjer named him Mike Schmidt which made up for his exceptionally lame personality.

alright, y'all know my ass puts a bigger emphasis than most on sound design and music. so how does the shiny 5-star fare in that department?
...pretty poorly! it sits in a sweet spot between typical and grating. if i had to pick a favorite ost, i would pick the jazzy lounge car theme (though that's the midi-jazz addicted section of my brain talking). oh, on the note of the traincars- i haven't even introduced the main concept of the game yet. it's a murder mystery on a train. musically underwhelming though it may be, the devs did make up for that aesthetic weakness with the visual design of the traincars. each one makes up the equivalent of a telltale episode. every character (or duo of characters) gets their own traincar; this way, everyone gets their own tailored little environment and slot of screentime. very swag B). shadow's car/the lounge car is my favorite, with its little chao band (called the Big Chao Band). the Big Chao Band had two drummers and two bassists and two pianists because the assets kept glitching and duplicating on cj's screen. tbh shadow's car should have had emo music. he's a certified guyliner user. he's also a certified "kid who cried to linkin park in their room because they were gay and in the closet", though i'm too much of an amy x shadow person to 100% call him gay. their dynamic is perfect here. i appreciate the writers showing his soft side considering sega's trying to turn him into this 1 dimensional cool guy as of recent.

what were we talking about?

any good sonic game has one confounding game design choice that sours the experience for normies. surprisingly, this visual novel has a huge one in the form of mandatory gba-ass isometric platforming sections. i feel bad for whatever 7 year old didn't get to see the ending after getting filtered by the final section's projectile gauntlet. luckily, i watched cj play the game over call, so i get to ignore all that and proclaim that this is a perfect game. like any other kamige, the message is obviously to live happily. i'll say i certainly came out of the murder of sonic the hedgehog happier than i did subahibi! i know this is an april fools game, but sega: i would kill for a sequel. my face hurts from how much i've been smiling.

"to the confident, unshakable, and radiant amy rose!"

As a visual novel enjoyer this was really good, the jokes, the art, even the censorship when choosing a name, everything was perfect and its free, it deserves a 5 star

I named my character "Kazuchika Okada."

I don't know why.

Great VN.
I'm not a Sonic fan, but I was really into it.

Siempre hay algo en la papelera!

more fun and charming than it has any right to be. also tails is so cute in this game that sometimes it made me cry. he's so cute i became mentally ill about it

it was very cute and funny, I should've probably played this sooner. all the music is great and the art was stellar!

im surprised how much trouble i had with some of those later minigames

if you like the blue rat and his friends dont skip this!!!!

extra note not directly about this game:
considering the "braindead sonic twitter discourse of the week" is currently about this franchise over relying on self referential nods to "better times" in its writing, I think you can point to this an example of doing that in a non-overbearing and fun way. (although i guess it being a visual novel heavily focusing on the characters as opposed to a sonic centric platformer certainly leaves more space for that idk)
