A Kojima game that showcases like no other how awful of a writer he is, mostly because Policenauts is a visual novel with little actual gameplay to fall back on. The story, which appears to have been written during a late-night bender after Koj stumbled upon Lethal Weapon while channel surfing, is super predictable in places and features his usual expository tangents that obliterate any sense of pacing. There's also the well-known misogyny that's rampant in the game. Players can sexually assault most of the female characters in the game while casually talking to them, and it's played either for laughs or to titillate. I know we're all extra sensitive to this sort of thing now, but it's hard to see how it was ever acceptable even back in 1994.

Some nice visuals, some nice music, yadda yadda yadda. Little else going for it.

Idk, I disagree that kojima is a bad writer exactly (Aside from his writing of women being really horrible and misogynistic and insensitive and just generally really terrible). In the metal gear solid series I can agree that characters speech often feels really... janky. The characters often don't feel like their really talking to each other, instead just spouting details the player needs to know to understand the plot, But I think most Kojima fans are aware of this and that's why they like it. Though not always top quality it does have a sort of charm to it and some of his later games have some really intense and emotional moments despite it. I haven't actually played policenauts though so maybe the writing in this game is 10x worse than in any MGS game idk.
@Serious Thanks for all the likes.

I actually loved Kojima once upon a time. MGS1 was the first game directed by him that I played and I thought it was amazing. Still do. But MGS2 was a massive disappointment, and over time I just grew tired with both his hugely inflated ego and his obsession over Hollywood celebrities. Death Stranding was the final nail in the coffin and made me realise that I just can't sanction his self-indulgent nonsense anymore.

But the guy is loved by people both in and outside of the gaming industry, so what do I know.
