Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is absolutely a game that shouldn't have worked, let alone exist.....and yet it does. This absolutely wild crossover that plays like XCOM of all things is actually pretty good but I do get the feeling that it kinda suffers from first game syndrome.

The core gameplay of the game is pretty neat and I do like that new enemy types (even if they cheat) and gimmicks keep getting added to the game, it helps keeps things fresh. Each character plays semi-uniquely and for the most part, rotating them around will get you pretty far and the combination of certain abilities allowed for some pretty funny strats. Though I do wish that there were more victory conditions, it's not something i felt too strongly about. Where the game shone most though is in it's boss fights, each fight is unique and all but the final boss were pretty fun to figure out. Outside of the battles, there is the overworld in which you explore but it felt pretty barebones to me. You'd occasionally come across puzzles here and there but most of them can be brute forced.

However, for being a strategy game, your options are kinda limited. The title "Mario+Rabbids" means Mario+Rabbids. Your team comp is a max of three but really it's a max of two because Mario is a forced deployment. Additionally, there must always be at least one Rabbid character so really your team comp is more of 2.5. There's also zero way to revive characters during battle so losing even one can be devastating depending on the situation. Pretty much everything wrong with the game culminates in World 4, as it's the one World where i wasn't having too much fun with.

Mario+Rabbids is a fun game with some surprisingly funny dialogue that i got for $5 (seriously this game goes on more sales than any other Switch game) and the upcoming sequel is definitely on my radar now as it seems to make some key improvements (although do i want to pay Ubisoft $60). This game is a 7/10 mainly cause World 4 sucks so much but perhaps the score will go up after i play the Donkey Kong expansion.
