Far Cry 2 plays like a video game version of Heart of Darkness. It ruminates on things like the war machine, colonialism, and violence in video games, the latter being further explored in future Far Cry games. Far Cry 2 also seems to decide to reinforce those themes by making itself as difficult and unfun to play as possible.

You’re constantly hunting for medication to treat your malaria, your guns have the durability of toilet paper, and outposts respawn so fast after clearing them that doing so feels useless.

If you can vibe with all that, Far Cry 2 is a real gem of a game. It’s the most divisive game in the franchise, but future Far Cry games have taken more from it than from Far Cry 1. If you can’t past Far Cry 2’s frustrations, maybe just read or watch an essay about it.
