Honestly i dont see all the hate for this game here, sure its not the best Fallout game, its not even the second best Fallout game, but this game was far from terrible, even far from average.
The story as usual with Bethesda games is poor, but the world and the gameplay is a treat, the VATS mechanics was innovative and super fun to play with, the big weapons arsenal, the post apocalyptic atmospheric setting was horrifying. The exploration was fun and side quests while not on the same level as games like New Vegas or Witcher they were fun to play.
I also liked the expansions quite a bit, The Pitt offers good shades of grey storytelling, the Mothership offers funny humors action alien adventure, the Broken steel was bad in story but it gave the game more content and the point lockout was like a horror island mix with fallout gameplay.
Music is lackluster as well as interesting characters, except for Ghouls. Ghouls are cute.
Fallout 3 is a really good game, its fun to play and its memorable and innovative, I think it deserves more love here on this website.

I liked it but the performance on PS3 where I played it was absolutely dreadful.

Yeah if i would give an advice it will be to stay away from any Bethesda game on Sony console, either Xbox or preferably PC.
Big draw is the modding community, i think its insane how much the mods do increase for Bethesda games.

I think as you said it later, its people reassessing their opinions on Bethesda but also being extra harsh on them, i would point out to the recent example of Fallout 4 vs The Outer Worlds reception, while i dont think Fallout 4 is amazing or anything but i think its a decent open world game with good FPS gameplay and terrible story, but i still think its better than The Outer Worlds, and people gave TOW a pass on many things just to spite against Bethesda and its understandable, Bethesda business and customer support models absolutely sucked, and they deserve the hate they got.
So yeah i agree with your reasoning, i also still like Skyrim but i was never crazy about it, even though i dont like what Bethesda was and is doing recently it still didnt affect my ratings of their games somehow, I always looked at them for the fun sandbox and frankly they are one of the few developers who can do that. Their writing has always been poor, Morrowind is the only game with decent writing in their library imo.

Its cause most people that hate it parrot that one YouTube guy’s video, i like both it and NV and don’t see many/any vast differences between either that makes one a “Masterpiece” and the other a “piece of shit”

Yeah i wouldnt say its a huge difference, but New Vegas is clearly the superior RPG experience, its a better transition to the 3D open world from the OG Fallouts than what Fallout 3 did, i have to give credit for Fallout 3 innovative mechanic such as VATS though and the open world was fun to play with. Perhaps ridiculed, but that's propably because Bethesda became a joke over the years and people are starting to meme all of their games to oblivion and back.
Also maybe some people are retroactively reassesing their opinions about Bethesdas Games since they have been so spectacularily dogshit lately.
Hence the hate for Skyrim (I still like Skyrim, but fuck Bethesda).
