One of the most thrilling and scary horror games I have played.
Any horror game that successfully manages to keep you on your toes not because of the jump scares, not because of the monsters, but because of the oppressive and well crafted atmosphere it creates it deserves to be recognized and separated from the rest.
Darkness is really a thing here, as you don't see absolutely nothing when in darkness (with the right brightness settings) and it affects your character for the bad, but as the same time, darkness is your best ally to escape from the horrors that lurk the castle. And the constant pressure of saving the oil in your lantern for the moments when you really need light adds a layer of stress, as you constantly worry about when to turn it on and when to stay in the shadows.
Voice acting it very good, and sound design is the real star here.
And if you still haven't spoiled you the story, you are set for a very crazy ride.
An absolute must-play classic.
