One of the most toxic games I’ve ever played that I keep playing

Dead by Daylight is an Asymmetrical survival horror game that has a very split community, you either love or hate this game and either way you’ll probably find yourself playing it again and again… for some reason.

As an Asymmetrical survival horror game, making the argument this game is balanced or unbalanced depends on the ever changing meta and what your skill level is. The low skill level, average player will probably find the killers overpowered while the high-level players will find the survivors overpowered. I can see both sides of it as I’ve played this game with both sides of that community, these days I hardly play it at all because without friends it isn’t as fun, and I also have fallen behind what the meta is and who is considered good. The idea of this game is one killer hunts and either kills or hooks survivors till everyone is dead or sacrificed to the mysterious entity that has pulled everyone into the match. The survivor’s job is to avoid being detected and repair generators to escape though a gate or if you are the last one alive can wait for a hatch to spawn in and take the hatch and that’s basically it. There are a bunch of vague and extremely situational perks that keep getting buffed or nerfed with every update while also having more added with each new DLC. Each match you get blood points which are used to level up and unlock perks and items in a skill tree. The gameplay gets repetitive fast and even when I was having fun, I often wouldn’t play too many matches. DBD now has a cross-play dedicated servers and I find myself going from finding games super-fast to waiting like 20 minutes to get in a match with little in-between. You probably have heard about this game because of all its licensed killers which ill be honest is a reason I keep reinstalling it and going back, there is just something really cool about having Laurie Strode (Halloween), Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil), Bill (Left for Dead) with an Ash (Evil Dead) going against someone like the stranger things Demogorgon on a Silent Hill map (BTW if you are interested in Stranger things DLCs they are currently no long available for purchase due to copy right problems I guess, just a heads up.) but with all of that cool content aside, the honest truth is this game wouldn’t be nearly as popular without them, don’t get me wrong it would be (and was even before the licensed stuff) a popular game as a lot of the killers are original designs but I think a lot of people go into this thinking it will be an easy to pick up game where they can play as their favorite character and have a good old time like this is F13 the game or something but unfortunately this game is super hard to pick up and keep up with if you don’t play it 24-7 and its always changing. Visually, sound design wise and of course character design wise it’s a wonderful horror multiplayer game but when it comes down to play ability for new comers it’s definitely not easy. Most people I know that play it on average seem to hate it and have a not fun experience, but I know a few who are top tier players that win almost every match, have a blast and still get frustrated as hell, mostly with the community. Unfortunately, this game is toxic as hell and only seems to have gotten worse with time. I miss the old days when this was an obscure small-scale f13 game with like 3 dlc killers. Almost every match I get killers that tunnel survivors (camp them until they die) or uncooperative survivors that don’t help and leave the match. Speaking of leaving matches the rules on leaving are almost too strict now where if your friend lags out of the lobby and you leave to go with him and try again you will basically be put on trial for war crimes by the US government and be placed on an unending shit list for the rest of your life on this game where, say your wife’s going into labor and you need to leave the match well don’t do it cuz the game will put you on probation and not allow you to play matches for a certain amount of time and it only gets bigger with each leave or disconnect, it’s absolutely ridiculous. I think a big problem with this games core mechanic is you need 100% cooperation from your team against a decent killer or you will probably all die and its exhausting if you aren’t playing with friends. I think for most people if you want to try this game out you will need to live and breathe patience and play with friends as getting good at this game takes time, playing as killer is probably more fun if you are going in solo but there are a lot of unwritten rules about how players expect you to behave like tunneling is definitely a no, no and if you are a survivor I suggest helping people even if they suck unless you love getting hate messages. This is one of those “It’s a fun if everyone plays it the way its meant to be played” games and I think this is one of its core problems but isn’t really fixable without overhauling the whole game. I understand both sides of this coin, players shouldn’t be toxic, but I think they would rather take the easy route to getting blood points rather than do the right thing. One way to fix this might be to have different game modes for different types of players to enjoy, maybe even one where you have a different objective but it’s hard to say. I personally have a love and hate relationship with this game but find myself playing it less and less as time goes on. If you are a horror fan like myself, I recommend giving it a shot as you might really like it but don’t feel bad if you lose interest.
