Sonic CD has some of the most buttfuck-insane level design that often feels at odds with its "time travel by gaining speed" mechanic. In spite of it, there's a certain uniqueness to the game that melds together with its brilliant soundtracks, style unseen prior in the series via its 2D animated cutscenes, and more unorthodox boss fights that make the game's highs shine all the brighter.
