Excitebike 64 suffers a bit of an identity crisis as it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a more simulation-focused motorbike title or an arcadey one. The actual racing, while solid, came off a bit too technical for my liking, as I was expecting an arcade experience more akin to the original Excitebike. There's still some DNA shared here though, especially in terms of track design and how it uses jumps. However, I felt something was off as soon as I realized how lengthy the multi-step tutorial was; it's not required but there's enough there to discourage a pick-up-and-play mentality. There is an impressive, feature-rich game underneath this, especially for something of its time, but it really just wasn't what I was looking for out an an Excite title.
