I had the pleasure of completing Dead Cells and its expansions before immersing myself in the experience offered by Return to Castlevania. I must admit that Dead Cells is a high-quality platformer, with captivating graphics and engaging gameplay. However, when it comes to its role as a Metroidvania, it falls short of my expectations.
On the other hand, Return to Castlevania is a true homage to the beloved Castlevania series. Every corner of the game is filled with references and nods that please long-time fans. It is a visual delight and a treat for those nostalgic for the franchise. However, I must admit that the Metroidvania gameplay doesn't quite reach the same level of excellence. I found some sections to be confusing and unclear, and I expected more depth and complexity in the level design and gameplay mechanics.
Despite these criticisms, I want to emphasize that Return to Castlevania allowed me to relive the thrill of playing as Alucard in a "new" Castlevania after a long time. It was a nostalgic and gratifying experience that took me back years. Now, with this renewed hope and inspiration, I can't help but dream of a new Castlevania installment that lives up to the fans' expectations and the greatness of the series.
