it's... fine. Honestly, the discourse around this game has been wild to witness. I'm glad it was on gamepass so I could try it out - I needed to play it for myself to properly form an opinion. Just by looking at it, I could tell something was off. My suspicions were correct. It's mediocre in almost every aspect outside of the creature designs and some of the animations/UI presentation. Unfortunately, it's borderline IP theft due to the way the pals are designed. It's so obvious, and I don't think it should be championed. I'm all for companies ripping off other companies that do things well; but this is a step too far in that direction when it comes to lifting art assets. Maybe not -literally- but -essentially- based on the proportions, the shapes, the colours, etc. It's shameless.

Otherwise, it's a basic survival game and it's boring.

Yeah, it is interesting how Nintendo hasn't hit them with a copyright claim as some of those designs lack originality. Still, I don't think it warrants a 1.5/5 lol, that seems a little harsh.
@Redbackloggd A lot of it comes down to the fact that I just don't care for survival games in the first place. I'd probably have enjoyed it a lot more if I played it with others. But even still, that's not necessarily a compliment to the game. Also, I do really try to use the full scale of the 5 star system. "Good, but not for me" starts at 2/5. 1.5 on my scale means.... it's okay. There are redeeming qualities but it doesn't stand out. Not that it's terrible.

Ah okay, thanks for explaining your system, that definitely makes a lot more sense.

If you aren't a fan of the genre in general, what made you want to try out Palworld?
@redbackloggd Sheer curiosity due to the insane explosion in sales versus the assumptions I was making about the games quality just by looking at it. I wanted to be able to comment on it but felt as though, without playing it, my criticism would be invalid. I like to enjoy video games, but I also thoroughly enjoy critiquing them. Also, I "was" a massive Pokemon fan, but have been very critical of their downfall since 2011 or so. I have still played all the newer releases - still grasping at hope for a turn-around. Seeing people say things like "see Gamefreak, this is what people want!!!!" in regards to THIS had me extremely curious about what I was seeing - because it didn't seem to line up whatsoever. I feel as though I was right in my assumption. People are desperate for something new with Pokemon, so much so that THIS exploded in sales. Wild.

I really respect that brother - I fucking hate it when people critique games after watching a playthrough and thinking that suffices. Video games are interactive mediums, and that you put yourself into the game's shoes despite not being a fan of the genre is really admirable.

And lmao, that is such a solid point - that people are willing to jump at anything that shows even the slightest bit of innovation. Tbf though, I heard the same thing happened with Arceus, which didn't change the formula much yet the veneer of doing so was enough to generate hype.
@redbackloggd

Yeah, I like to try to keep up with what's going on. I enjoy it! At this point I take everything with a grain of salt. Everything is either fantastic or it's horrible. There's no in between, apparently. Also, yes... Arceus was the same situation. It's not good lol. It's just different enough that people latched on to the differences. To me, they were mostly bad differences. Tired of shoe-horning open worlds in to things. They usually make things worse. Not always, but usually.

Anyways, nice chatting with you LOL I've never had a full blown conversation on Backloggd

Yeah, that's the smart approach for sure - keep expectations short and hope for the best. I don't think Pokemon will ever change- Nintendo always does their own thing and the games are geared towards younger folks regardless lol.

Hey man, was completely enjoyable, I love talking with well-rounded reviewers and look forward to doing it more in the future. Glad I could be your first :)
