This game is going to get compared a lot to the defunct Nintendo Switch game Pac-Man 99. Both bill themselves as a battle royale twist on the classic pac-man maze gameplay. But whereas Pac-Man 99 had the foresight to make itself free-to-play, Chomp Champs costs $20. As a result, the player base is as shallow as puddle. I played for 16 hours over the course of a fortnight (no pun intended) and I was lucky if there were 7 other human players in my match. The game also has the audacity to charge for costumes and mazes based on other popular Namco franchises. Pac-Man 99 had cosmetic microtransactions as well, but the base game was always free. It's true the player base eventually dwindled after a year, but Chomp Champs is DOA. This is despite having crossplay between all consoles and PC!

While I was very disappointed with Chomp Champs I still got some mild enjoyment climbing the online tier scoreboard. It wasn't hard to reach the highest ranked title because most of my opponents were bots! But that joy was so fleeting that I can only recommend this game if you are a fellow Pac-Man superfan and if your friends are willing to play matches with you. Even then, please wait for a sale. I wouldn't be surprised if this game's servers went the way of its predecessor. Twenty dollars is too much to ask for a dead Pac-Man wakking.
