i think theres something to be said about """"review culture"""" (lets call it that for now) when a 3-min long game that reads like vent art seems to garner attention for some reason

Why do we seek to quantify something clearly very personal based on how much it resonates with us?

I think my problem is that I think people are looking at this game as they would a product. Like it needs to have some value to me, otherwise it's not "worth playing".
But I don't think "cave story sex rpg 2007" (lol) ever tried to be relatable. Its, as others have noted, similar to a page from a personal diary. So why rate it based on how much we cared about it? Do we need to care? It feels to me like that was never the point, or the intention.

Talking about this game feels like seeing a sad, personal comic online and saying that you don't relate. Or looking at a random poem on the bathroom wall and trying to critique it.

If I made such a personal game and then saw people were saying how "it didn't resonate" with them, I'd feel pretty awkward, y'know? Why would it ever?

review culture...?

we all played it because it kept showing up on our front pages/notifications and it was only five minutes long. nobody said it was meant to be relatable, but that doesn't change the fact that this "personal diary" has been publicly released with the intent that others see and react to it. if not, then why the hell's it here?

Some of the reviews look like the equivalent of someone reviewing a homemade sweater as if it was an ebay funko pop page

> review culture...?

i couldnt come up with another word lol, note the 3 pairs quotation marks

> nobody said it was meant to be relatable

I mean, I feel like people are basing their opinion on how they relate to it, though? Feel free to disagree but that's what I noticed in what were, at the time, the most liked reviews on this game.

> that doesn't change the fact that this "personal diary" has been publicly released with the intent that others see and react to it

I don't think this is necessarily true. Just because something is on the Internet doesn't mean you're looking for criticism or welcome it, even if it's not explicitly stated by the author.
There is something that irks me about holding this game under the same standard you would hold any other game while reviewing it, hence the "looking at this game as they would a product" part in my """review""" (not a review, I know). Like, this isn't another Assasins Creed, y'know? What's the need to talk about how this game is "alright" or "worth playing"? Why are we looking at it like it was made by Ubisoft and not as something different, despite acknowledging its similarity to a diary page in terms of how personal it is?
I don't think this """review""" will change anyone's perspective on anything but IDK, I feel like you gotta draw a line for when you're sincerely engaging with art and when you're just reviewing for the sake of reviewing. It comes down to me not personally feeling comfortable with people reviewing something like this in like, general. Take it or leave it.

When someone wears their heart on their sleeve and makes a game like this, I just think the better thing to do is experience it and move on rather than making a review

I mostly agree with you, but I disagree with (what I think) you suggested of "the better thing to do is experience it and move on". You're right that we should move a bit forward from recommended and can relate (I think this one could be expanded into more interesting thoughts anyway). But the game being small and personal (which I generally like) doesn't mean that we should just move on or not criticise in any way.

What I'm saying is that this can be "reviewed as an Assassins Creed" not as in should you buy or not (which is always a bad approach imo), but in channeling some thoughts through the game. Not doing that for me would feel like I'm underestimating this game just because it's small and personal, like if bigger games played in another league where they can be good or bad but this one is something you experience, move on and it couldn't be a game that you really like.
