Sonic Superstars is... alright!

The levels aren't as vibrant and imaginative as I'd like them to be, but they're pretty fun to get through. There were a few standouts, such as one zone that took lots of notes from unused Sonic 1 concept art. Some of the stage gimmicks I found particularly enjoyable and fresh. Music was up and down - some really good tracks were followed by very out-of-place ones. It creates a sense of tonal whiplash, considering some of these tracks took inspiration from the Sega Saturn era of Sonic sound, just to be followed by a half-baked Sega Genesis imitation. Bosses were very hit or miss, some I found enjoyable while some left me wondering when they would end. Certain attacks were not telegraphed well, and openings for attacks could be quite far apart at times.

All in all, Sonic Superstars is a fun time. Nowhere near the Sonic game of my dreams, but not bad either. It's a solid romp that doesn't excel at much but offers a decent experience nonetheless.
