I know many love this game as much or more than ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. I thought it sucked sooooo bad :D No, that would be too extreme. I liked the world, graphics and how the relationship between the player and the doggo develops. But the controls and camera were so uuuuuunbelievably shitty, I couldn't believe the game was released in this state. Every second of gameplay was torture for me. As a result, I found it difficult to enjoy the beautiful story and creative world. That's a shame, because this is where the game is really strong. Unfortunately, it plays like ass :/

Did you give commands on his back?

@Schmliff0 It's been a while since I played this but I'm pretty sure that yes, I gave commands to him on his back as well as in the environment, depending on the situation. Would you say this has a significant impact on how the game controls and feels? Or how the camera behaves?

Trico is a lot more high tech than he seems. He will struggle to listen to your commands if you are on his back because he can't see what you are pointing to. At the start of the game, saying your command three times is usually enough to get him to understand, but over the course of the game, as your bond strengthens, he gets a lot better at understanding your commands, and sometimes, he'll know what you would want before you even say it. By the last third of the game, I consistently was able to command him. I would only recommend riding on his back when you are ascending or descending, as there's simply far more control on the ground, and the camera is a lot better.

Also, praising him benefits his ability to understand if he did something right or the way you wanted it. The best advice I can give you to get the most out of the game, is to treat Trico like he's an actual animal, rather than a game mechanic.

He'll get curious and explore the environment, just like an actual cat would do. He's far more alive than any other AI companion in a game imo.

@Schmliff0 Oh yeah yeah, I really liked that aspect of the game and I did realize that Trico's behavior is modeled after an actual animal. Teaching him commands and seeing how he learns was definitely a highlight for me. As I have mentioned in my review, everything regarding the relationship between the boy and Trico, the story and world were amazing. However, I have to disagree when it comes to camera movement and controls being better when you're not on Trico's back. Even on ground, the game felt clunky as hell to me. Same goes for the platforming, fighting...navigating in general. Of course that is highly subjective and it probably just felt better for you than for me.

Ah, I thought when you were talking about the relationship, it was in regards to the story, not the ludo narrative.

As far as the controls go, I honestly expect that from Team Ico. I don't think any of their games have very tight controls. So in a comparison to those previous titles, it's no better or worse in my eyes. Maybe a tad too fluid and "realistic". (Tripping and stuff.)
