Still the best souls game overall. The atmosphere and thematic completeness of the setting, the slow and strategic combat, the varied and interconnected areas, and the restriction of fast travel makes this easily the best game I've ever played at immersing you into the feeling of being on a journey through a dangerous world.

The criticism that Dark Souls has a "bad second half" is incredibly exaggerated and has its root in the misguided ideas that gimmick = bad and the game is all about hard combat. There is one undeniably bad section, but one or two bad hours in a 40ish hour game (for a first playthrough) is hardly enough to make this not a masterpiece.

SPIT! The bad second half is only just for lost Izalith and even then, having to sacrifice a ring slot to be able to traverse through the area adds decision making which can impact how a build plays out though I think tomb of the giant handles that better with the fact you have to get rid of your secondary equipment. In my opinion I think this could have been fixed by having you fight an enemy in a lava pool that guards an item (if my memory is right there is a single place where there is something close to that but you can just use the non lava parts to fight them)
I do agree that the bed of chaos is a horrible boss.
Nito is a better boss fight than 90% of the bosses in this game and I will die on this hill, I just hate how you take fall damage but that's it.
