Metal isn't necessarily my favorite genre of music by any means, but the promise of a rhythm game version of Doom was just too intriguing for me to pass up. The moment to moment gameplay is compelling, the weapons all fit well within the rhythmic nature of the mechanics, and the music all bangs. I might not be the person to come to for general opinions on metal music, but each level had a song that was easy to get lost in as I tapped my foot through each encounter. However, Metal: Hellsinger falters when it comes to its generally uninspired and bland enemy and level design. You'll be fighting a lot of the same types of enemies in rooms that all look eerily similar to one another, and when you're finally faced with a boss fight, there is only one design used throughout. The good news is that a lot of the complaints I have feel more like the limitations of a new developer and smaller budget, rather than a lack of imagination. Seeing as this is The Outsiders first game, I'm thinking there's a good chance that whatever they decide to do next will be something truly head-banging. If they keep bringing the energy they used to think up Metal: Hellsinger's concept, I'm burning to see what they conjure up next.
