Mario 7 mostly exists now in this awkward spot, where it wasn't as popular as Mario Kart Wii, but was before Mario Kart 8. It's still fun, but the repetitive formula for these games takes its tole on Mario Kart 7.

What's good about Mario Kart 7?

Unexpected characters are in Mario Kart 7, while they're most likely not characters you wanted they're characters that don't get represented often (though Lakitu and Metal Mario are both in 8.) giving them a chance to Shine in Mario Kart, like the previous mentioned Metal Mario (from Super Mario 64), Honey Queen (from Super Mario Galaxy 1/2), and more. Making the roaster more interesting than a usual Mario Kart.

The item balancing is balanced especially compared to Wii, Double Dash, and DS. No Thunder Clouds either!

A major change between Mario Kart Wii which infinitely makes this game already really good is that the Blue Shell's functionality is reverted to that of Mario Kart 64 where it targets every player before targeting first place.

Why is this good?
-Players in a less than ideal position can catch up with other players if the blue shell hits them (before it just hit first place, which doesn't make a lot of sense if you're in a lower position).
-Players in first can be warned about the Blue Shell ahead of time, instead of instantly getting targeted.

What's bad about Mario Kart 7?

The online while it still somehow exists as of this review (October 2020) is not good at all with constant communication errors or if not that, there's a lack of players.

Customising Karts is just okay. It's not special, but is more annoying than having a prebuilt kart with already determined stats as I'm never usually sure on what to pick.

Battle Mode stage selection is not great with a lot of non-favourites are options and the new courses outside of Wuhu Town aren't memorable or fun to play on.

Missing Favourites, this character is missing a lot of favourite characters from some, which some people see the unexpected as a negative for due to the lack of characters such as Waluigi, Birdo, and King Boo as examples.

Overall, this Mario Kart is okay, but the repetitive formula of the last few games starting with DS really make this game feel lackluster.
