Ape Out’s frenetic gameplay, woven together with impeccable art and sounds design, creates an escape that has to be experienced. As the ape, player rampage mazes full of enemies to reach an exit in a blaze of lizard-brained glory. Although this loop mostly stays the same, the game finds ways to creatively shake up the experience over the two hour runtime. Visually, Ape Out looks like construction paper come to life, painted by splatters of adversaries, and it is a joy to behold. It is the music/sound design, however, which really sets Ape Out apart. Accompanying the action is a highly percussive jazz score which adapts to what is going on, accented by extra beats or cymbal crashes when enemies splat. All these things together make an for an utterly captivating experience. It immediately sets a rhythm and vibe to just sink into and go. Unfortunately, by the end, a new enemy type, enemies firing from off screen, and occasionally imprecise controls start to break up the vibe a bit. But certainly not enough to mar the accomplishment that comes before it or the cathartic ending it provides.
