Brutal Legend wants to be a lot of things, and it succeeds at some and fails at the rest. It succeeds at being a super fun romp that pays a lot of respect to metal culture while creating something from it. The story is engaging and funny to a certain point, and the voice acting is absolutely phenomenal. Doviculus' voice actor was exceptionally good, it's disappointing that he was used so little. The art style is incredible too, I would've liked to have seen a bit more in this style. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the elements of this game are good, with some fundamental flaws. The pacing is horrid, it feels like this game was just getting into its third act when it just...ends. Everything is paced pretty well until after Lionwhite is killed, and then it's kinda all over the place. The writing is funny sometimes, and serviceable the rest of the time. The combat is repetitive, I appreciate that each unit has a double-up attack, but they're almost all go to a place and do an AoE blast in front of you. The game also turns into an RTS game like halfway through, which im sure threw some people way off the first time they ran into that. That side of this game is weird, it kinda works but you never feel like you have complete control over your units, it's just kinda gathering everyone in one place and throwing everything at your opponent. I enjoyed my time with this game, but only because I went into it expecting a funny Jack Black romp about metal. This game has some really great ideas, but just horrible execution. It's barely held together by a good art style, good music, and Jack Black. The title menu is sick as fuck tho.
