I have clear memories of my girlfriend being excited about this game and, to be honest, I wasn’t thrilled at all. You see, I had this amazing experience tattooed in the back of my brain: swinging around and fighting the worst enemies in the PlayStation 2. Ever since, I never got even close to that feeling. All the following games were, to say the least, passable. The trailer looked great – yes, sir – but could they change the huge flow of terrible games?
Yes, they could and hell yeah, they did. Drinking from the Arkham masterpieces, Insomniac created the ultimate spidey experience. A lot were achieved concerning narrative matters, but any Spider-man fan knows that you can have a wonderful story, but if you fail in the gameplay, you’d lose it all. And, oh boy, they got it right. The city isn’t only beautiful, but it feels awesome to go through it. Jumping, wall walking, swinging, running, everything feels just like being Spider-man. Even the counter-based combat gives you enough freedom to approach the battle anyway Spider-man could.
Last, but not least, the story is crazy good. It fits well for those who have familiarity with the friendly neighborhood stories but works well for anyone. The creative way they reimagine the universe and give depth to key characters is remarkable, not to say the chapters that you’re able to play with other characters.
