I didn't get to play New Super Mario Bros. U back in the Wii U days mainly because I was burned out of the "New" 2D series and had other things I considered a priority to play. But now with the Super Mario Wonder hype I finally decided to play the Deluxe version on the Switch and I'm positively surprised! The game no doubt has the best level design and visuals of the entire New series, it's incredibly fun to find all of the games secrets, and I want to say that I was impressed by the Van Gogh style stage back in 2012, and It's still amazing today in my OLED Switch screen. I appreciate a lot when the game mimicks Super Mario World because it's my favorite 2D Mario game, the world map is nice, and freely choosing where to go and having the possibility to find secret exits and skip entire worlds is fenomenal. The variety of level gimmicks and enemies is very well paced. I liked the baby Yoshis mechanics and how you can take them to almost any stage, I found them more fun to play than the main power up, the Flying Squirrel Suit, which is pretty tricky to control and I end up falling in pits most of the times I try to use it. I liked the option to play as any character, Toadette is pretty interesting and I used her during my Star Coin collecting cleanup. Peachette is a kinda obnoxious concept IMO, but it's fun to play as her as she is a better Flying Squirrel Suit + the Penguin Suit's swimming. I also want to complain about how they didn't update the saving system in the Deluxe version of the game, it made me lose progress in six stages of the Star World cause I forgot to manually save, this is so stupid!
But to conclude, this is one of the great 2D Mario games, the game is unique and can't be recreated in Mario Maker 1 or 2. I will for sure return to play Super Luigi U in the future.
