Good ol' Mario Land 2... I don't love it. Mario Land 1 feels like it's trying to be portable Mario and, because Mario had only ever been portable before on the Game & Watch, the developers had no idea how to do that and made a pretty unique game. Mario Land 2 feels like it's trying to be console Mario. It's not bad at being console Mario, around jank with Koopa shells and jump momentum, but the consequence is that it feels less unique. Mario Land 2 offers some kinda out-there level features, but nothing truly wild or unique, so it just ends up feeling like a mild ROM hack or conversion. The exception is Wario's Castle, of course, which is the first time Mario's ever really tried a long, grueling endurance level - something we wouldn't see from the plumber for a very long time. And Wario himself is a very fun anti-Mario, of course. Great ending for an otherwise disposable game. Not bad, just... there.
